Plant Fossil Wood

A quarryman’s garden

When quarrying down to the Portland Stone, the overlying Fossil Forest was removed, uncovering countless blocks of fossil wood in the process. Some quarrymen hoarded the wood and, along with ammonites from the Portland Limestone, piled them high in their tiny yards on the Island. That is probably how the collection made its way to Portland Museum. Another collection is on display in the grounds of the Heights Hotel at the very top of the Island.
