Ammonite

Name change

Note how the label states ‘HOPLITES VERIANS’ with ‘Sowerby’ after it, but in fact the correct identification is Metoicoceras geslinianum. Sowerby was one of the great ammonite workers from the late 19th century and he named many of his finds (that is why his name follows the scientific name). However, as more specimens are found and their relationships are better understood, researchers need to reclassify and rename species.
