Bryozoan

Sea mat

These bryozoans, growing on a shell, are ancient animals from the same group as the colonies of ‘sea mats’ we see today – tiny, box-like animals that grow on shoreline rocks, shells and seaweed. This is a very large specimen compared with the other bryozoans in our collection. Examples like this are occasional finds on the beaches and undercliffs around Charmouth and Lyme Regis.
