Plant Fossil Wood

Limestone often forms around fossil wood, particularly in the Lower Lias. That allows crystals, in this case pyrite and barite, to grow inside the wood. The gold coloured crystals in the centre are the pyrite which formed first, while the radiating crystals are the barite. Several ammonites are preserved in the rock around the branch.
