Ammonite

Ancient sea life

This block of limestone contains ammonites, belemnites and shells.  It tells the story of life in warm, shallow seas.  The close-up photo on the right shows the two ammonites side by side. This block came from the Loders road cutting in the early 1980s, when the A35 east of Bridport was rerouted along its present alignment to avoid a narrow and steep hill.
