Teacher Training

We all know that educators are pressed for time and the prospect of learning about new areas of science, particularly rocks and fossils, can be daunting. Here at the Big Jurassic Classroom we want to help you to become an inspired Earth Science educator.

Big Jurassic Classroom Discovery Days

Big Jurassic ClassroomWe are currently offering all primary school teachers across Dorset and East Devon a unique opportunity to learn more about the incredible stories of the Jurassic Coast. Unlike any training days we have offered before, our new Discovery Days put you in the hands of a real Earth Scientist.  Working alongside them you will discover how scientific research is conducted and how we can interpret that information for the classroom environment.  One of the highlights will be Dean Lomax from ITV’s Dinosaur Britain. On 8th February 2017, Dean will showcase his research on Ichthyosaurs and help teachers to become palaeontologists for the day through hands on investigations of real fossil specimens.

The Discovery Days are based at museums and visitor centres across the Jurassic Coast, including the new Museum of Jurassic Marine Life in Kimmeridge, opening in October 2016. The days are free to attend, thanks to funding from the Primary Science Teaching Trust, a charity whose sole purpose is to build expertise in schools nationally that demonstrate excellence in science teaching. This is the final year of funding, so make sure you book your place soon, as we are anticipating a huge level of demand! Free tickets are available in our shop.

Big Jurassic Classroom Twilight Training Sessions

If you can’t get to one of our Discovery Days, then we can come to you!

The Big Jurassic Classroom team offers a two hour twilight training session (4pm – 6pm) that incorporates key aspects of our formal training including hands on activities and suggestions for curriculum planning. Our twilight sessions are tailor-made for your requirements which includes delivery of content across key stages (from Foundation to Key Stage 3) and across all relevant subjects (Maths, English, Science, Geography and Art and Design). These sessions cost £150 (not including travel expenses) and can be delivered to staff teams (including Teaching Assistants) of up to 20 people.

Home Educator Networks

For those of you who choose to home educate your children, we also offer training sessions for parent educators. In these bespoke sessions, we will work with you to identify key stories to explore with your children and showcase relevant locations and events where you will be able to take inspiration for your home learning. We are sorry but children cannot attend these training sessions. Prices are available on request.

Initial Teacher Training and NQTs CPD

We welcome enquiries from trainee and new qualified teachers who wish to work with us as part of a continuing professional development programme. We offer technical expertise and mentoring to enhance your confidence for teaching earth sciences in the classroom. There is no fee for this, but we expect all participating teachers to join our Jurassic Coast Ambassadors network to assist with some community outreach.
