Wareham Town Museum’s geology display shows how the Wytch Farm oil field (the largest onshore oilfield in western Europe) is closely linked to the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. The oil was generated in the Lower Jurassic rocks that are exposed around Lyme Regis, but in Purbeck they have been buried deep under-ground, deep enough for the organic material trapped in the black shale to be ‘cooked’ into oil.
