The 150 million year old black clays of Kimmeridge Bay record marine life towards the end of the Jurassic Period and are a natural source of oil. The ‘nodding donkey’ on the other side of the bay is an active oil well which has been in operation since 1961. Beneath the sea are important habitats rich in marine life. You can go rock-pooling, follow the snorkel trail or visit the marine tanks in the Centre to see the wonderful local marine life and learn more about the Purbeck Marine Wildlife Reserve.
