As thousands of people give #Veganuary a go, rest assured that you don’t have to head to a hipster metropolis to get great vegan food. Here on Dorset and East Devon’s Jurassic Coast, you can find a superb range of plant-based options for all tastes and budgets.

It’s a win-win-win – you can help the planet and reduce your personal environmental impact (see this article for more), you can eat tremendously tasty and nutritious food, and you can help to support some brilliant and innovative local independent businesses during a period where they vitally need our help.

Here are my recommendations for the Jurassic Coast’s top vegan and vegan-friendly eateries, arranged from west to east.

Spoken Bar, Exmouth

This classy bar/restaurant does a superb vegan breakfast for under a tenner (try getting that in London), including vegan sausages, avocado, artichoke and hash brown.

You can practically get your five a day in one meal here, before heading to Exmouth’s magnificent white sandy beach for a stroll, swim or paddleboard to work off your brekky.

The Hideaway, Seaton

A real hidden gem that offers arguably the most spectacular view of any Jurassic Coast dining establishment, this under-stated locally-run café offers a superb Vegan Jackfruit burger as well as vegan breakfast options, with the gently lapping waves of Seaton Hole making the perfect soundtrack.

Grab one of the lovely al fresco tables and soak up the magnificent views of Beer, Sidmouth, and deeper into Devon one way, with Axmouth, Lyme Regis and the ghostly curves of Portland the other.

Tierra Kitchen, Lyme Regis

This long-established all-veggie Lyme fave has recently changed focus from fine dining to takeaway lunches, much to the delight of the local veggie community.

Their ever-evolving menu incorporates a variety of international influences, all beautifully prepared using delicious fresh and locally-sourced ingredients. Check the tide times, grab a Tierra box, and head to the beach for some world-class fossil hunting!

During lockdown, Tierra Kitchen are also offering home delivery to those lucky souls who live within a few miles.

This scenic hot-spot offers a great range of vegan options including a monolithic vegan nachos that can easily be shared between two.

The views are second to none and the drinks options are fabulous as well.

The Secret Garden, Weymouth

This recently opened all-veggie gem offers a fantastic range of lunch options, including leak and mushroom pie, homemade chilli and rice and a couple of vegan burger choices.

The atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and comfortable, and located just a hop, skip and a jump from Weymouth Harbour, it’s the perfect place to refuel while exploring the town’s historic seafront or its range of historic locations.

Java, Swanage

Tucked away amongst Swanage’s charming cobbled streets, this cosy establishment is all-veggie and offers delicious soups, sandwiches and coffees.

A must visit when exploring Swanage’s historic pier, visiting Durlston Country Park, or taking a walk to nearby Old Harry Rocks.
