Throughout history, there have been many pioneers and trailblazers in palaeontology and geology with links to the Dorset and East Devon Coast. Perhaps the most well-known is Mary Anning, but there are many others from the Dorset and East Devon coast worth celebrating.
Early investigators challenged the prevailing biblical traditions in their pursuit of better understanding the world around them. This led on to the “Golden Age of Geology”, during which time pioneering fossil collectors, such as Mary Anning and Samuel Beckles emerged. Their pioneering work enabled the establishment of the study of Geology and Palaeontology at Universities, where fossil enthusiasts such as William Buckland were able to expand their knowledge and inspire others in the process. Later scientists, such as Marie Stopes, the founder of Portland Museum, would benefit from this field of study, as have current geological and palaeontological enthusiasts. We hope that the array of learning opportunities the Jurassic Coast presents will continue to inspire for generations to come.
