The Jurassic Coast is a historically important area for the development of palaeontology as a science. The fossils found here have helped to advance our understanding of past environments, climate change, evolution and mass extinction, and the eroding coastline continues to provide new discoveries. It is for this reason that we must protect and conserve the World Heritage Site for future generations as well as the fossils that tumble from its cliffs.
The protection and conservation of the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site is a rich story, not only about fossils themselves but about people too, their passion, dedication and skill.
Fossil Collecting Codes
Fossil collecting on the Jurassic Coast is under-pinned by the West Dorset Fossil Collecting Code and Recording Scheme.
Comprehensive information about the code is available on Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre's website.
There is also a fossil collecting code in place covering the Undercliffs National Nature Reserve.
