The Lookout Tower
The Look Out Tower is perched right on the cliffs edge giving unrivalled views of the stunning coast to the south and beautiful farmland to the north. Historically, the location Jurassic features are everywhere to be seen and it is a hot bed for finding neolithic age flint tools; if you know what you are looking for a short stroll can unearth commonly used tools knapped over 4000 years ago. The spot has been utilised for centuries: as an early warning signal station built for the Napoleonic war in the eighteenth century, as a station to combat smuggling in the nineteenth century and as a coastguard in the twentieth century. To preserve the sense of history the original structure has been almost entirely kept; with a considered extension added to allow a little more room and comfort.
The remote location, in this AONB (Area of outstanding Natural Beauty) is ideal for walking, jogging and hiking with an adventurous walk down to Hooken Beach that is far less busy than its neighbours. The Tower boasts great privacy but with a footpath passing by and paragliding a regular pursuit there is still enough activity to watch as you unwind.
The Lookout Tower has been transformed by a local architect from Exeter and local builders and has won an LABC award for Best Alteration to an Existing home. The home gives a party of up to four a comfortable escape away from their day to day lives. Water supplied is from a borehole, so pure that it needs no treatment other than UV filtration and is heated along with the building by an air source heat pump. The electricity required for the building is partly powered by solar.
There are two bedrooms and shower room on the ground floor, a kitchen and outdoor veranda on the first floor and a lounge on the second floor all connected by a pneumatic vacuum operated lift. We were keen for the Tower to be improved with disability access in mind so all doorways are wide enough for a wheelchair and the shower room is a wet room, the lift is not enough for a wheelchair but a seat is also provided so that with help each floor is accessible.
The incredible views will have you transfixed but the top floor is where scenery is at its best. Reminiscent of the top of a light house you can see for miles up and down the coast when the weather is clear. On stormy dark nights there is a wood burner to keep you cosy and even an occasional pull-out bed if you want a friend to stay over.
We believe you will find the view from the kitchen no less impressive. With matching Neff appliances, an instant boiling water tap which will also produce cold carbonated spring water at a turn to make any culinary work on holiday less laborious.
The bedrooms like all the other rooms in the Tower have underfloor heating with a TV and there is a Celestron SC Telescope that can be positioned on the first-floor veranda that we provide on demand for any astronomy enthusiasts.
Outside we have an EV charging point, plenty of space for the kids to run wild, safely, a BBQ area all within a newly laid Devon stone wall boundary. There is an outside washroom, storage & a sauna! The only neighbouring building is a 16th century bungalow!
There are plenty of lovely places to eat in the vicinity, the Beer Head Bistro at the nearby caravan park, a number of restaurants and pubs in the village and many wonderful eating establishments a short drive away.
