The Jurassic Coast Trust is collaborating with Portland Museum to provide a new role as Museum Assistant. This role involves assisting the manager in both Front of House and behind the scenes work. The front of house work is to assist and serve visitors, as well as providing a high level of customer service. The back of house work is to support the work maintaining and displaying the collection in a historic building.
The role involves dealing with and informing visitors on activities that they can do in the museum and guiding visitors around the museum. When the museum runs outreach projects, such as ‘pop up museums’ in the community, the Assistant will be an integral part of this event both in preparation and helping staff the pop-up. The museum houses a number of collections of a diverse nature and the post holder will assist in maintaining and displaying these. This will give them the chance to learn more about the nature of museum work.
If the post holder has experience of social media they will become involved in the marketing of events and information about the museum to help create a buzz and attract more visitors. This could be via Instagram, Facebook or other platforms. There is a shop at the main entrance so the role will involve handling entry fees, cash handling for shop sales and advising on products for sale in the shop. The post holder will assist with some administration including taking bookings.
As this is a small team, comprised largely of volunteers, the post holder will assist with light building maintenance work and help to ensure the museum, shop and store room is always clean and tidy. It is important for the post holder to appreciate that a degree of flexibility is required when working for a small organisation but also the ability to be reliable, understand and stick to the processes and policies will be required.
The post is supported by the Jurassic Coast Trust, who are based in Bridport, but the usual place of work will be Portland Museum, Easton, Portland DT5 1HS.
