Find out about the history of quarrying on Portland and the world renowned building stone which has been used in many iconic buildings around the world including St Paul’s Cathedral and the UN buildings in New York.
Portland Museum also houses fossils discovered by quarrymen over the years, including enormous ammonites, the remains of reptiles that swam in tropical Jurassic seas, and a nationally important collection of fossil cycads, a type of plant that flourished during the Jurassic Period.
