What does the Jurassic Coast look like from 190m above the sea? Find out at Golden Cap. This famous landmark rises to 191m or 627 feet, making it the highest point on the south coast of England. The climb to the top is a challenge, but the reward is worth it. Waiting to greet you on the tranquil summit are panoramic views in all directions, from Portland to the east to Dartmoor in the west.
Golden Cap is flanked by meadows, streams and woodland, all part of a National Trust estate that is well worth exploring. For those who want to experience every single metre of the climb, you can start at sea level at Seatown and follow the path all the way up. The Anchor Inn at Seatown is the perfect place to refuel, with delicious food and local ale.
How to Get There
Golden Cap is best accessed from the A35 road, either by car or on the Jurassic Coaster bus service . The nearest village is Seatown, from which a lovely walk to the top of Golden Cap is on offer.
You can also access the site through an unmarked turn-off on the A35, after you've passed Chideock (heading west) and have reached the crest of the hill. This road takes you to Langdon Hill Woods, a beautiful National Trust site with fabulous walking and a more leisurely ascent to the top of Golden Cap.
Car Parking & Facilities
There is a privately operated car park at Seatown, but be warned that it gets extremely busy during peak periods and traffic from the A35 down the narrow lane to and from the site can be severe.
We recommend catching the Jurassic Coaster bus from Bridport, Axminster, Lyme Regis or one of the other towns it services.
Things to See and Do
The National Trust's Golden Cap Estate offers fabulous walking options, including the mysterious "lost village" of Stanton St Gabriel. All that remains of this once thriving medieval community is a ruined chapel and a manor house that now serves as National Trust holiday accommodation.
Climbing Golden Cap itself is a rewarding experience, offering spectacular views across the Jurassic Coast and the satisfaction of knowing you're at the highest point on the English south coast.
